A pearl is a round smooth and shiny object that is produced within a living shelled mollusk. A pearl is made up of calcium carbonate that has been deposited in concentric layers. The most valuable pearls happen spontaneously in the ocean, but they are extremely rare. Cultured or farmed pearls are most common and now make up the majority of those that are currently sold.
